In Part I, 'Contexts and Achievements?, the topics considered are: the implications for Gellius, his contemporary Apuleius, and the imperial tutor Cornelius Fronto of employing Greek in a Latin context; the differences between Fronto?s and Gellius? evaluations of the lively vulgarisms used by Laberius in his mimes; Gellius? linguistic skills as an etymologist; his literary skills as a narrator; his relation to the antiquarian tradition on which he drew so extensively. Part II, ?Ideologies?, begins with the expectations aroused by writing a miscellany; then, in two chapters redefining the concept of moral instruction, Gellius? claim to educate his readers and the humanisme gellien asserted by the late René Marache are shown to be tenable if correctly understood; lastly, his attitude to intellectuals is compared with that of Apuleius against a background of satirical tradition. The opening chapter of Part III, Reception?, considers the use made in the Middle Ages and afterwards of a morally improving passage of Gellius, together with false ascriptions to him of matter from other sources and evidence of his diffusion through manuscripts now lost. There follows a study of his presence in sixteenth-century France covering his editorial history and his service to scholarship and literature, above all Montaigne?s Essais; finally, he is found showing humanists how to accumulate information, display their learning, and conduct their quarrels, but also (and perhaps unexpectedly) stimulating scientific research.
